The Formal Gardens

“There is a stillness in the gardens as the sun starts to sit low in the sky, the sound of birdsong comes alive, and the fragrant scent of roses fill the air…”

~ Lady Esmonde, 1690

  • The Italian Parterre

The parterre, or formal gardens, were laid out by Lord Esmonde in the 1680s. Featuring impressive formal plantings & layouts, including the fragrant rose walk.

  • Water Gardens

Over the past few years, we have invested heavily to restore the stew ponds & lake. We are pleased to open the original water gardens, laid out by the Esmondes in the 1680s, to the public. Enjoy the tranquil serenity & spot the local wildlife.

  • The Yew Walk

Enjoy a stroll along the world-famous Yew Walk, and spend some time amongst the ancients. Planted before the formal gardens, the Yew trees are over 500 years old.

  • Seasonal Gardens & Champions

As the seasons change, so do our gardens. Nestled beneath our Champion Trees, the snowdrops grace our woodlands in January before bluebells welcome Spring. Enjoy the seasons with a Garden Membership.
